Skokie Electronics Recycling and Document Destruction Event

Solid Waste Agency Northern Cook County (SWANCC) will be hosting an Electronics Recycling and Document Destruction Event on Sunday, April 14, 2024, from 10:00am - 2:00pm.  This event will be held at the Old Orchard Westfield Shopping Center located at 4905 Old Orchard Center, Skokie, IL 60077.

This event is open to residents of SWANCC Member Communities only.  IDs will be checked. 

What to know before Electronics Recycling

There is a limit of seven (7) items per household and no electronics can be accepted from municipalities, schools, businesses, or institutuions.

Accepted Electronic Materials:

  • Cable Receivers
  • Cell Phones
  • Computer monitors
  • Computers (Desktops, Notebooks, Tablets)
  • Converter Boxes
  • Fax Machines
  • Keyboards
  • MP3 Players
  • Portable Digital Assistants (PDAs)
  • Printers (Multi-function Printers)
  • Satellite Receivers
  • Scanners
  • Televisions (All Types)
  • Video Game Consoles
  • Video Recorders/Players
  • Zip Drives
  • Mice

NOT Accepted Materials

  • NO microwaves
  • NO toasters
  • NO blenders
  • NO coffee makers
  • NO vacuum cleaners
  • NO lamps
  • NO stereo equipment
  • NO speakers

These items can be thrown away in the garbage if they cannot be donated for reuse or recycled through other entities.  See the Reuse and Recycling Directory for options and call location first to confirm that your items will be accepted.

What to know before Document Destruction

There is a limit of six (6) paper bags or small boxes, and no documents can be accepted from municipalities, schools, businesses, or institutions

How to prepare for the Document Destruction event:

  • Paper must be dry, clean, and loose
  • Remove plastic sleeves/spires/covers/binders/folders
  • Remove metal or plastic clips including paperclips and bider clips (small staples are okay)
  • Place paper in paper shopping bags or cardboard boxes
  • DON'T bring paper in plastic bags. Use paper shopping bags or small boxes
  • DON'T include photos, slides, negatives, hardcover books, or store receipts
  • DON'T include expired plastic credit cards or cases for checks
  • DON'T include anything that is NOT paper

Accepted Documents:

  • Bank statements
  • Financial planning statements
  • Medical history forms
  • Retired tax documents
  • Documents with personal information, such as social security numbers

Unaccepted Documents

Recycle these items in your curbside cart:

  • Magazines
  • Junk mail
  • Ads or coupons
  • Newspapers

DO NOT place batteries, medications, sharps, and household chemicals, or any items containing these materials
